Lycaste, growing at the Quito Botanical Gardens, Quito, Pichincha Province. This is a smaller genus of single-flowered terrestrial orchids commonly found at altitudes between 1000 and 2000 meters in Ecuador. It is closely related in structure to Maxillaria and Xyllobium, although it is the only earth-growing member of that group. Lycaste are generally smaller flowers, about 5cm across.
